Questions to Ask a Termite Inspector

7 Questions to Ask a Termite Inspector

If you’ve got a termite inspection pencilled into your diary you may be wondering what questions you should ask the termite inspector.

Below we share seven queries which should be raised either before or during the inspection.

7 Questions to Ask a Termite Inspector

  • How much experience do you have with termites? (What are your qualifications?)

Termites can by hard to detect by the untrained eye.

That’s why it’s vital that your inspector has sufficient training and experience uncovering these destructive timber pests AND determining the likelihood of future termite attacks.

  • How do I prepare for a termite inspection?

There are several simple tasks homeowners[MB1]  can carry out prior to an inspection to make our technician’s job easier and ensure the inspection is as effective as possible.

They include:

  • Moving furniture and household items away from walls inside and outside.
  • Ensure our technicians can access hard-to-reach spaces like storage areas, attics or crawl spaces.
  • Trim overgrown trees and bushes that limit access to a property’s foundation.
  • How much does a termite inspection cost?

At the time of publishing, the cost of a termite inspection was $xxx.

Where termites are detected, the cost of termite management and treatment will be additional to the amount above.

Did you know some of our customers enjoy our combined services discount when they book a termite inspection and another service (Carpet cleaning, pest control or rodent inspection) at the same time?

  • How long does a termite inspection take?

Generally, a termite inspection is around an hour in length, however, it can take longer if any issues are uncovered.

  • What aftercare do you provide, if any?

If we have not located termites, we will book your next inspection. Where the risk of termite activity is low to normal, we would schedule this within the next twelve months. Where the risk is higher, we would recommend more frequent inspections.

If an infestation is found, we implement a personalised management program. We then carry out follow-up visits to ensure all the destructive pests are eradicated and being kept at bay.

  • How susceptible is my home to a termite attack?

During the inspection we will determine any risk factors which could increase the chance of a termite attack.

We will share our findings with you so you can keep an eye on any problem areas and help to prevent a termite colony settling in. Read more about the recommendations we make below.

  • How can I best protect my property between inspections?

While most homeowners have termite inspections every twelve months, you should be vigilant in between assessments and keep an eye out for any signs of termites, like mud tubing, discarded termite wings and timber damage. [MB2]

Following an inspection, our termite managers will also make tailored recommendations to each homeowner. These will be aimed at reducing the risk of a future termite attack on the property and could include measures such as installing a termite chemical barrier, termite baiting systems, or even more frequent inspections.

We will deliver our findings and recommendations to you in a report within 24 hours of the inspection. [MB3]

White Ants vs Termites

White Ants vs Termites: Is there a Difference?

If you’re researching White Ants vs Termites, you might be surprised to learn that white ants are in fact just another name for termites – but termites are not ants at all!

We explain in greater detail below.

White Ants vs Termites

Subterranean Termites, are often referred to as ‘White Ants’, basically because of their size and colour, but this classification can be a little confusing because termites are not actually ants.

In saying that, if you haven’t been through the proper training or seen termites first hand, it may be very difficult for you to differentiate between ants and termites.

What is a Termite?

Subterranean termites are social insects that live in a colony. They feed on cellulose which is found in many timber building materials, and as a consequence cause significant damage to thousands of Australian properties each year.

They are pale in colour, which is sometimes described as light brown or “creamy”.

Termites are small and said to range from 0.6 – 1.2 cm.

How do Termites Differ from Ants?

Here are some notable differences between regular ants and termites:

  • Body shapes: Ants have a narrower section at the waist, whereas termites do not have any real distinction between their abdomen and thorax.
  • Colour: Ants vary in colour but tend to be quite dark or close to black.
  • Antennae: Some ants have antennae which are described as “elbow-shaped” I.e., 90-degree angles. Termites, on the other hand, have straight antennae which appears to be beaded.
  • Sight: Many termites in a colony will be blind, yet ants have compound eyes so have better awareness of their surroundings.
  • Environment: Termites require moisture and will not survive where the conditions aren’t right. Ants also like the humidity but have adapted to moving about in outdoor environments (rather than in mud tubing like termites).

Termite Inspections and Treatments

It’s important to keep an eye out around your home for any signs of termite activity, like mud tubing, timber decay or damage, or discarded wings, and if you have an inkling there could be termites to call in a licensed inspector like All Corners Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control.

If a termite infestation is uncovered, an appropriate treatment plan will be put in place by our team.

If termites aren’t uncovered, we can help with preventative measures to reduce the chance of a termite attack in the future.

Signs of termites

Signs of Termites

If termites had settled down at your property, would you be able to spot the signs?

South East Queensland has a number of different species of destructive termites – with the most common being Subterranean Termites – and each year they cost many homeowners thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately, many homeowners aren’t aware of a termite infestation until the damage has been done. But if you knew the signs to look out for you may be able to act quickly in the event of a termite attack on your property.

Signs of Termites

1.Mud tubing

Subterranean Termites thrive underground or moist out-of-the way spots, but if they need to travel around to access a food source, they do so in mud tubes.

These hard mud tubes protect them from predators and allow them to move about in the humid conditions which they need to survive.

This brown tubing is often quite narrow (0.5-2.5cm wide) and can be found on interior and exterior walls, floors, around the perimeter of your home, and on the sides of buildings.

2.Timber decay or damage

If the termites have been left to their own devices for long enough, it’s likely that they have compromised the structural integrity of your property.

They are known to feast on wood from the inside out, leaving behind a just sliver of the timber or paint. From the outside the timber may appear normal, but when it is knocked it could sound hollow, or may even break or collapse with very little force.

3.Door and window frames are warped

Following on from the above point, termites may have caused damage to timber frames on doors and windows frames.

This damage can in turn prevent you from closing the doors or windows properly.

Blistered wood and paint can also indicate termite activity.

4.Discarded termite wings

While subterranean termites do thrive underground, there are termites in mature colonies called swarmers that can fly. These termites travel around during the warmer, more humid summer months to reproduce, and shed their wings in order to attract a mate.

As these insects are attracted to light, their wings are often found discarded near window sills or doors.

Schedule an Inspection

If you do spot any of the above signs and suspect termites are active nearby, do not disturb the area.

Instead call a licensed termite inspector, like the professionals at All Corners Carpet Cleaning and Pest Control, and schedule an assessment.

Hot water extraction carpet cleaning

Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning

To achieve the most superior fresh floor feeling we swear by hot water extraction carpet cleaning (commonly referred to as carpet steam cleaning).

But if you’ve never seen our team in action, or heard of this carpet cleaning method before, you may have some questions about how it works and its benefits.

Keep reading as we explain what hot water extraction carpet cleaning is and why it’s our method of choice (and should be yours too!)

What Is Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning?

There are two main steps in this carpet cleaning process and, as the name implies, they involve very hot water and the extraction of all that dirt and filth that’s embedded in the carpet fibres.

Step 1: A special mixture of hot water reaching a temperature of about 100 degrees and cleaning agents is dispersed onto the carpet. When the solution is applied, it works effectively to loosen the grime that’s lodged deep in the material.

Step 2: The contaminants which have been lifted out of the carpet fibres are extracted by our truck-mount machine. Its suction is so powerful that it not only removes some of the most stubborn dirt, but it also sucks up the excess moisture ensuring a fast dry time.

Benefits of Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning

  1. No harsh chemicals – The products we use are safe for all members of your family, including those with fur.
  2. Environmentally-friendly – As hot water is the primary ingredient in our cleaning solution, the type of carpet cleaning is considered to be one of the most eco-friendly alternatives.
  3. Offers a deeper clean – When it comes to carpet cleaning methods, this one is far superior to other options due to its ability to remove build-ups of sediment.
  4. Fast drying times – As most of the moisture is removed during the extraction step, we find most carpets are dry in around four to six hours.

Termite Inspection Brisbane North

Termite Inspection Brisbane North

If you’ve spotted signs of a termite infestation at your Brisbane North home, or it’s been more than a year since your last one, it’s time to enquire about a termite inspection.

In this blog we explain what’s involved in a termite inspection and how to make a booking with our friendly team.

About our Termite Inspections

Due to the destructive nature of theses timber pests, it’s important to commit to regular inspections. That way signs of termite nests may be uncovered before any significant structural damage is done.

At All Corners Carpet Cleaning and Pest Control we recommend have a termite inspection done at your Brisbane North property at least once a year.

Our inspections are completed by a licensed termite inspector and this qualified professional is trained to detect their nests and activity.

EXPERT TIP: It is vital that the inspector who comes to your property has adequate experience as those without sufficient training may not be able to recognise termite activity.

If there’s no evidence of termite activity during the inspection, our team member will observe and take note any high-risk conditions which may attract them.

Once our assessment has concluded we will then make recommendations about how to minimise the chance of an attack in the future.

Signs of Termite Damage

In between regular inspections, homeowners should always be on the lookout for signs of an infestation.

Those could include:

  • Hard mud tubing around the home
  • Signs of timber damage or decay

It’s important to note that if you do believe termites are nesting at your home, leave the area as is (do not disturb them) and have a qualified termite management technician carry out a proper assessment and treatment, if need be.

Termite Protection Brisbane

Termite Protection Brisbane | 4 Actions to Help Prevent the Pests

Having termite protection measures in place for your Brisbane property could help to prevent an attack and save you plenty of stress and money in the future.

At All Corners Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control we are highly skilled at protecting residences and commercial premises from termite infestations. In fact, we’ve been ridding properties of the destructive pests for more than a decade.

We explain more about actions which may help to reduce the chance of the pests inhabiting your Brisbane block below.

How To Protect Your Brisbane Home From Termites

They say prevention is better than a cure and the same is true about termites. It is far easier – and much less costly – to protect your home from them than to deal with the consequences of an infestation.

So, how can you prevent your home from these harmful timber pests?

Here are four (4) courses of action which may assist with minimising the risks of an infestation:

  1. Have a Termite Reticulation System installed

A termite reticulation system consists of chemical pipe positioned along the home’s perimeter. Pesticide is expelled though perforated holes in the pipework. It’s best to install these systems before any concrete slabs are laid.

More information here

2. Install baiting stations

Bait is positioned inside stations which can be placed above or below ground.

The intention is to attract termites and have them feed on the insecticide, before they transport it back to the nest to affect other termites.

3. Schedule more frequent termite inspections

While we recommend yearly assessments, you may opt to have a qualified inspector visit more regularly, for example half-yearly or even quarterly, if your Brisbane property is prone to termite attacks.

4. Be vigilant and checking for signs of activity

The sooner you spot a problem, the faster it can be dealt with by a professional.

One of the best ways to do this is to keep an eye out for evidence of termites, like timber damage or mud tubing.

It’s important to note that if a termite problem has been uncovered, a tailored treatment management plan will be developed by the professionals at All Corners Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control before any protective measures are put in place.

How to prepare for termite inspection

How to Prepare for a Termite Inspection

Termite inspections play an important role in protecting your home from the destructive timber pests and limiting the damage they may cause, but you may be wondering how to prepare for a termite inspection

Below we share a few simple tasks homeowners can carry out before our licensed inspector arrives to make their job a bit easier and allow them to jump straight into their inspection.

How to Prepare for a Termite Inspection

In South East Queensland the most common species of termite is the Subterranean Termite.

If this species of termite has built a nest at your property, it won’t always be easy to detect as these pests don’t inhabit spaces in the open. Instead, they hide away in a spot where the humidity is high – often underground or near a water source.

This means our inspectors will need to thoroughly examine areas in and around your property that are harder to reach or out of the way.

1.Move furniture and clutter away from walls

Termite nests are often found inside wall cavities, so we will want to access the perimeter of your indoor and outdoor spaces to check for damage to timber and any other signs of a termite infestation.

If you have clutter inside your home that may obstruct our investigation, or large pieces of furniture against the walls or near window frames, we ask that you please move it beforehand.

2. Trim overgrown trees or bushes

Your termite inspector will also need to assess the home’s foundation and the exterior walls.

Any overgrown hedges or trees will hinder their inspection, so we ask that they be trimmed back beforehand. If you are comfortable, you can do the pruning yourself, otherwise you may wish to call in a professional.

In addition, if there are any heavy household items stored against exterior walls, such as barbeques, bikes or garden equipment, please move those prior to our arrival.

3.Enable access to hard-to-reach areas

During our inspection, we will need to examine a range of out-of-the-way areas that aren’t often frequented by humans. Those spaces could include storage areas, crawl spaces or the attic. Please ensure there is no furniture blocking the entryway to these spaces.

4.Clean out cabinets under sinks

We ask that you take out any items which are in the cupboards underneath sinks in areas like the bathroom, laundry and kitchen.

5.Inform the home’s residents about the inspection

It’s a good idea to let everyone in the household know the day and time of our inspection.

That way they can help to prepare the property ahead of time.

How Long does a Termite Inspection Take?

If you’ve been able to carry out some of the above heavy lifting before our inspectors arrive, you can expect the termite inspection to take around one hour, however, it could be longer if issues are uncovered.
